Our Need For Crazy

Panama City Florida artist, Paulette Perlman and her Artcar, "De Art Coupe."
If you live along the Gulf Coast and are thinking about evacuating to flee the mess left behind by Hurricane Isaac, why don't you head up to Marietta Georgia this weekend?  Georgians invade our beaches, so turnabout is only fair play, right?

I'm actually charmed and honored to have several faithful readers in the Atlanta area, (hello, you little peaches!) and they are always up to something fascinating. This time, it's . . . ArtcarPalooza!

Bonnie Blue, from Houston Texas and her Artcar, Women That Rock.

The inaugural event which is being co-organized by my dearest Georgia Belle, Rachel, will be attached to the ever popular Labor Day "Art In The Park" on Marietta Square.  Cars that have been gussied up by their imaginative owners will be on display to feed our need for crazy.

Think "Beadazzler" meets Ford Motor Company.  Wild, man.

Folk Artist Chris Hubbard and his "Heaven and Hell" car.

Gulf Coast artist, Paulette Perlman, pictured at the top of this page, owns two art cars and says all the locals in Panama City know her by her groovy transportation,"De Art Coupe", which will whisk her up to Georgia.  Organizers hope to grow ArtcarPalooza to be as large as the Houston Texas Artcar event that annually draws over 300,000 spectators!

Using an automobile as canvas is the ultimate in contemporary folkart, and with all the creative souls we have in Fairhope, I'm surprised, no SHOCKED, we don't have an artcar or two in town!  Could this be a new class offering for the Eastern Shore Art Center?

Ray Nelson's Guitcycle will be cruising in to Marietta.

ArtcarPalooza is free, and donations will be given to Wounded Warrior Project.  The show runs September 1 and 2 from 10am-5pm each day.

This may be what I miss most about living in the South: all the crazy! Or perhaps the pralines. It's a toss up...
